INTRO TO GLASS FUSING

March 21-23 2015 (Saturday-Monday) 10AM-4PM

May 15-17 2015 (Friday-Sunday) 10AM-4PM

This is a hands-on course designed to teach beginning/intermediate students about the fascinating world of glass fusing. Learn about the properties of glass, kilns and firing schedules, different glass media, basic coldworking, and color in glass.

Day 1: We will begin by discussing the unique properties of glass. We will then delve into our first project using textured glass and glass powders. We will then begin a kiln carving project.

Day 2: After removing and examining the first night's firing, we will explore basic coldworking, after which your first project will be put into the kiln for slumping. We will also work on our kincarvings. We will then explore four different glass fusing techniques that will allow you to start building your own tile set for future reference. If time allows, we will then learn to create a 3 dimensional freeze n' fuse project.

Day 3: The day begins with coldworking our kiln carvings. We will then examine the original first slumped pieces and small projects. Small projects can be coldworked. A lecture on kilns, firing schedules, basic studio practices and Q&A will end the session.

Class price: $375 includes all glass*, tools, materials and lunch.

Students who complete this course are entitled to then participate in open studio.

NEW CLASS!! STRIP CUT CONSTRUCTION

February 20-23, 2015 (Friday-Sunday) 10AM-4PM, Monday (10AM-2PM)

Learn the many ways to use 'Strip Cutting' to construct defined or loosely structured patterns using glass cut into strips and turned on edge. We will make 3 projects in this four day class, including a drop form cup. We will use both transparent and opaque colors and explore the many ways this technique can be used.

Day 1: We will begin by discussing the unique properties of glass. We will then learn about strip cutting techniques and execute and fire our first project.

Day 2: After removing and examining the first night's firing, we will delve into basic coldworking, after which your first project will be put into the kiln for slumping. We will then explore ways to make a strip cut construction more complex by assembling components to be fired seperately and reassembled. We will also start our drop form cup project using organically shaped strips.

Day 3: After removing our assembled components from the kiln, they will be cut up, coldworked, reassembled and fired. Our cups will be 'babysat' by opening the kiln and observing their progress.

Day 4: Coldworking our cups and assemblages will take up the morning. A lecture on kilns, firing schedules, basic studio practices and Q&A will end the session.

Class Price: $450 includes all glass*, tools, materials and lunch.
